Small Cruise Ship, inside and Out

Inside and Out

The Small Cruise Ship, M/V Sikumi

by Alaska Travel writer Luke Chambers

My first tangible impression of Custom Alaska Cruises came when I arrived at the dock to board the M.V. Sikumi. I recognized the ship from the website, and I spotted it from my car as I looked for a place to park. Of probably 400 other boats in the dock, she was perhaps the most impressive. Much larger then the majority of the other boats, the Sikumi uniquely blends a sleek style with strength and power.  As I approached the boat I was greeted by the deckhand. He lowered the ship’s stairs and grabbed my bags for me. As I stepped aboard I was greeted by the captain and the remaining crew members. The deckhand showed me to my room, which was as cozy as it was spotless. The room was handsomely decorated with homey touches like the complimentary basket of fine soap and shampoo. I noticed almost immediately the high quality of the sheets on my bed. I was already looking forward to climbing in to rest!

The Sikumi’s Salon serves as a wonderful place to come together for meals, drinks, to talk, or just for relaxing. Its open design allows for everyone to gather there, and the windows wrapped all the way around me, letting me see what was going on outside from the comfort of my chair.

Probably my favorite place on the boat was the wheelhouse. The Captain was very inviting, letting me and the other guests come in to hang out whenever we wanted. He is very knowledgeable and approachable, making him a perfect candidate for operating a boat like the Sikumi.

I was also very impressed with the main deck. There was a ton of space, a great sound system, and half of the deck is covered. I found myself sitting on the top deck late at night and early in the morning, just taking in and enjoying the Alaska air.

The Sikumi was unlike any other boat I have ever been on. The impeccable service that you receive onboard matches the beautiful boat’s interior. Practically from the moment I stepped aboard I began dreading the end of the cruise, when I would have to step off and leave the Sikumi behind.
