Alaska Cruise

Luke's Comments on the Cruise Cuisine

As I prepared myself for my Alaskan cruise adventure, I couldn’t help but wonder about the food. I don’t think I am a picky eater (my mother may disagree) but there are certainly things I don’t like to eat. I’ve also never been a big seafood fan.

Armed with these reservations, Thursday morning found me stepping aboard to the sweet smell of something baking. After meeting the captain and crew I was presented with a wide assortment of items to snack on. The freshly squeezed orange juice and amazing fruit plate were just the beginning. As I waited for the other guests to board over the next hour, I chatted with the crew and munched on pineapple cake and sweet rolls.

Gabriel, the chef, took advantage of our opportunistic discussion and asked about my culinary preferences. He asked if I liked things like shellfish and Thai food, and also about any food allergies I may have. I found Gabriel quite engaging as he seemed to be taking careful mental notes of the things I said. He displayed his culinary prowess throughout the cruise, but his personality was nearly as appealing as his food.

After the first day on the ship, each morning found me thinking about Gabriel and what he may be cooking up for us. One day it was a curry Thai chicken dinner. Another morning we had handcrafted croissants stuffed with things like bacon and swiss cheese. And the meals weren’t the only time we enjoyed great food. Each time we made our way back to the boat, whether we were hiking or fishing or kayaking, there were freshly prepared snacks waiting.

Picky or not picky there was honestly not one thing that Gabriel prepared that I was not crazy about. Whether he was baking the freshly caught halibut, grilling burgers and brats, or frying some of the monster shrimp we caught, his work was always dead on.

I came away from the whole experience pleasantly surprised with the cuisine. Going into the trip it was an area of concern for me, but Gabriel quickly proved himself, going above and beyond from the very beginning of the trip.
