Katmai National Park and Preserve
Katmai
National Park is an outdood adventurer's dream come true. Fishermen,
kayakers, nature photographers and backcountry hikers alike flock
to Katmai to experience the pristine and wonderful wilderness
that is Katmai.
Katmai National Park and Preserev
is only accessible by air. Active volcanoees spit and smolder,
while many glaciers slide and flow between the many mountains
of the park. Four million acres of coastline beckon to both kayakers
and hikers. Deep forests, alpine tundra, and untamed wilderness
await park visitors.
The
wildlife in Katmai National Park is simply amazing. Perhaps the most popular
animal in the park is the brown bear. Some of these bears exceed
1,000 pounds and scour the banks of the many rivers in Katmai,
as they snatch leaping salon from the air.
Katmai
National Park is also of historical importance. The Brooks River National Historic
Landmark, which is comprised of about 900 prehistoric human dwellings,
is the largest and most elaborate site of its kind in North America.
Hunter's camps in some of the regions have been dated to be at
least 9,000 years old.
