Haines, Alaska
The
town of Haines is located at the end of the Alaska Marine Highway
(the native Alaskans called Haines "Dtehshuh", meaning
end of the trail).
Situated on Portage Cove, Haines is only thirteen
miles from Skagway by water, but 359 miles by road. Haines began
much the same as many other small Alaskan communities - as a trading
post. It later grew into a mining supply station. Today, roughly
3,000 people live in Haines. It is the home of the world's largest
congregation of bald eagles. Located a short 18 miles from Haines
is the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
