Girdwood, Alaska
Mountains
meet the sea is this cozy, vibrant, and always changing community
of about 2,000 people. Located on the Turnagain Arm and completely
surrounded by national forrests and state parks, Girdwood
is a short 35 miles from downtown Anchorage.
Alyeska
Resort is located at the bose of the Chugach Mountains, just off
of Turnagain Arm. The ski resort operates a tram which climbs
2,300 feet of Mount Alyeska in about five minutes. The views from
the top of the tram are spectacular, and the mountain boasts great
skiing and snowboarding.
Another
point of interest in Girdwood is the Crow Creek Mine. The mine,
which is on the register of National Historic Places, invites
visitors to try their luck at panning gold. The mine is about
three miles up Crow Creek Road and is open from May to September.
Girdwood
is also home to the annual Forest Fair. The festival hosts many
musicians and booths from which handcrafted Alaskan goods are
sold. The festival is free and takes place on the first weekend
of July.
