About your Birding Guide

Forrest Davis is founder and owner of High Lonesome BirdTours in Sierra Vista, Arizona . After retiring from a career as a health care executive in 1995, he started his own birding company, offering trips to Arizona , Texas , Mexico , Belize , Costa Rica , and Ecuador . His special interest has been in Alaska , and he has led numerous trips there over the past ten years. He is on the board of the non-profit Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory. Forrest's interest in birds and natural history began in fifth grade, and it has never wavered. He is a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps and NASA, both prior to his health care years. He earned his Ph.D. from The American University in Washington , DC .

Custom Alaska Cruises will be hosting a seven day bird watching tour centered around the 15th annual Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival. The cruise will include the four days of the festival (May 5-8) and three days before the festival. Before the festival we will explore the Prince William Sound and venture out into the Gulf of Alaska for some superb pelagic birding. We expect to find Laysan & Black-footed Albatross; Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel and Sooty Shearwater among many of the potential seabirds in the Gulf. We will find numerous alcids as well as whales, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, and dolphins in Prince William Sound .

The festival includes family oriented activities from the Birder's Breakfast (a pancake breakfast at St. Joe's Catholic Church) to the Bird Academy (where kids can experience learning about shorebirds and the environment in a fun and interactive way) to the Birder's Bash and Dinner Cruise. On Friday, New Jersey photographer Kevin Karlson gives the keynote speech at the Masonic Lodge. His talk is titled "For the Love of Birds" and will surely be interesting and entertaining. The diverse range of activities encompassed by the festival will provide fun and excitement for all in attendance.

Cordova, home of the festival, is a unique and exciting destination for a cruise aboard the Sikumi . Originally settled as a mining town, today Cordova is most well known for its annual festival, commercial fishing, sport fishing, and sea kayaking.
