Whittier Alaska
Whittier
and its population of a few hundred sit right on Prince William
Sound. Situated on the northeast edge of the Kenai Peninsula.
Visitors to Whittier can enjoy many activities both on the water
and on the shore.
The
big buildings that comprise Whittier were built in 1948. The army
built a 14-story, 198 apartment building for family housing and
Army bachelors quarters. The Buckner Building, which was completed
in 1953, has 1,000 apartments. At one time it was the largest
building in Alaska. It's been dubbed the "city under one
roof" because of its hospital, bowling alley, theater, gym,
swimming pool and various shops. The facility remained active
until 1960. In 1964 the building was converted to condominiums
and today houses the majority of Whittier residents.
Besides
the sound, Whittier is only accessible one route. The 2.5. mile
long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel connects Whittier to the rest
of Alaska. The $70 million road was completed in summer 2000.
The tunnel has one lane which is shared by buses, trains, and
cars.
